QGIS 2.8 has now been officially released.  2.8 is also a LTR release and will get bug fixes for a year.

The 2.8 branch will have a new release if there is a bug fix and two weeks of silence on that branch, unless it’s a major fix which will be released manually.

2.8 is a good version to get onto if you are looking for a stable version to sit on for a while.
